Summer 2020 Update from BMK
If you have read this once, you can skip down to the info on the specific camp.
This summer’s theme is supporting other women in business and I’m excited to feature some fantastic local business women in the arts, food and construction world. I strive to always listen to parents on how I can make your life easier when it comes to summer camps. Here are some new changes:
REMINDER: BMK IS LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVEWAY IN THE WHITE HOUSE. THERE IS A PATH THAT LEADS TO THE BACK OF THE HOUSE AND ENTRANCE TO BMK. DROP OFF KIDS AT THE LARGE SIGN AND CIRCLE AROUND THE DRIVE TO EXIT- THERE IS ROOM FOR TWO CARS. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK OUR AWESOME NEIGHBOR’S DRIVEWAY AND REMIND YOUR KIDDOS THAT THE PLAYGROUND IN THE GRASS IS THEIRS AND NOT PART OF BMK. PHEW- THANKS FOR READING.
We will have new goats (plus babies) and baby chicks starting in the spring so there will be time in all camps to play with the new and old animal friends. The new goats are mini goats as the old herd had to move onto a new home once we could no longer breed them.
Early Drop Off: I understand that driving out this way can put a burden on those who need to get to work early in the morning which is why early drop off is available starting at 7:30am. However, because I have kids of my own to get up and going and set up for the camps takes about 2 hours each morning, I cannot offer entertainment for your kiddos. You may drop them off at the path and they can go into BMK and play in the game room, read books or play on tablets from home until camp starts. They cannot play outside as there won’t be anyone to supervise. I would like to offer early drop off for free and will continue to do so as long as it doesn’t create more work for me as I am hustling to get ready for camp start at 9am. If you plan on dropping off early- please contact me the week before. Normal drop off starts at 8:45am- but if you are here before 8:45am, please just drop your child off, there is no reason to worry about being a bit early and not having signed up for early drop off.
Late Pick Up: It is important to me that no one ever stresses out about getting here exactly at 12pm or 4pm for pick up. Life happens and we have to worry about being late to plenty of other kid activities- so let me take this one off your plate. Pick up is extended 15 minutes past the end of camp. If you are on the later side and are picking up a younger kid, please come down to BMK as I may be setting up for the next camp and I don’t feel comfortable leaving kids alone out front. I do have cameras set up, so if they see you arrive, don’t be surprise if they meet you on the path. I avoid being on my phone during camps except to take pictures but I do leave the ringer on in case you need to get a hold of me. If you are running late- just text me and let me know- it’s no big deal. If you need a regular late pick up- please contact me before signing up for the camp as I cannot always accommodate pick ups later than 4:30pm.
Morning & Afternoon camp options: This year I am offering both morning and afternoon camp sessions, you can sign your child up for both sessions and send a lunch for them to eat during the turnover between camps. There is no additional charge for them to stay for both camp sessions. The camps have been designed so that the morning and afternoon camps do not overlap in what the kids make and work well as a full day of activities. There are 2 full day camps for high school age kids. The rest work as two half day camps.
NATURE PLAY: We have expanded the adventure playground and hope to have a treehouse, extended ninja obstacle course and more added by this summer. There may also be opportunity for kids to play in the creek too depending on weather (I spent many hours this fall removing all thorny bushes from the creeks). Because of that- I recommend sending your child with a pair of shoes that can get muddy and potentially an extra set of clothes. These can be left here during the camp so that you don’t have to bring them each day. Please always check your child for ticks.
Waitlist: Contact me to be added to the waitlist for camps or to check if spots are available even if the website says otherwise. Camps are capped at a lower number than usual to allow for scholarship spots. If you are interested in sponsoring a child who may not otherwise be able to afford to attend camp (partial or full registration) or know of a family who could benefit from a scholarship spot- please let me know!
Jr. Advance Cookie Baking and Decorating Class Plus Nailed It! —-Featuring Whisk Bakery—-
This camp is appropriate for kids who really want to challenge their baking skills and decorating skills- it’s a unique opportunity to learn skills that they could build on and use for years to come!
Kids will learn how to bake a variety of classic favorites (oreos, chocolate chip, sugar, etc) and then be able to create their own specialty cookie using what they learned. Kara, the owner of the respected Whisk Bakery in Solon, will be teaching the kids the basics of sugar cookie decorating- her work is fantastic and can be seen here! Her cookies are in high demand and I’m very excited to have her come and teach the kids some of the secret tricks to making sugar cookies look like edible art!
We will end the camp with a Nailed It! competition featuring cookies from Whisk Bakery and team cookie decorating competition. Kids work in teams and a large emphasis is put on the importance of respect, kindness and that making mistakes is totally okay! It’s in BMK’s kitchen that mistakes are celebrated and we learn how to learn from those mistakes and how to work with them to fix the problem. I promote independence in the kitchen and encourage kids to solve their problems on their own before giving them the solution. Empowering kids to think outside the box and feel safe to fail has been a part of BMK’s philosophy for many years.
