Champion Others

Don’t be a team of bittersweet.
From sports to medical to corporate – I have run into team after team made up of bittersweet. And very few made up of champions.
Yesterday, I ended up butt down in a shallow creek after tripping over a vine while clearing out the heavy brush in the timber. I looked up to see a thick vine of bittersweet with a smaller vine winding around it. Choking the larger one. Eventually it would have killed it, had my trusty hand saw not have done the job first.
Now the bittersweet choking the other bittersweet didn’t know better. It was just doing what it was meant to do.
But us humans? We do know better.
If you want to be a champion, your kid to be a champion, then you can’t just be the noun.
You have to also be the verb.
To be a champion, you must also champion others.
Learning how to be a champion leader is one of the truly wonderful things that can come from playing sports and yet sadly, there is not enough focus on it.
So much time and money is sunk into the equipment and physical training of athletes from youth to professional, without time spent on the mental aspect.
Confidence is built on failure.
Only one who is truly confident in themselves doesn’t just NOT step on the backs of others to succeed, they actively raise others up.
They don’t undercut the accomplishments of their teammates through insults, flinging shit, ignorant of how bad they themselves now smell.
In fact, a leader, a champion, doesn’t just not engage in that behavior, they speak up when they see it.
On the field or off.
Kindness takes courage and strength. Cruelty is born of fear and ignorance of how to be better, do better.
If you want to be a champion, you better start championing others. Tell the coaches, teachers, parents, bosses, when you see others do great things. Tell others about the greatness of your teammates, coworkers and friends.
Succeed not because others didn’t, but because they did.
