On Stewardship

When was the last time you thought of the word stewardship?
I’m actually curious so feel free to share.
It’s been on my mind a lot recently as we have been working to remove invasive species and allow native plants to grow. It’s work. I lost count of the number of thorns I have pulled out of almost all body parts. And in 90 degree heat, burning our 4th massive pile of brush- it’s not what many would call- fun.
But I love it.
I love it not just because I am a fan of hard manual labor outside, I love it because I know I’m doing something good. And after 2 years, we are already seeing a huge difference. The entire hillside is covered in ferns when there used to be just a few. Wildflowers are blooming when there used to be none. And native plants are getting a chance to grow. I also get to just have fun with saws and man oh man is that cathartic.
Being good stewards of our land is important to us, beyond its impact on BMK.
I feel the same way about my community both locally and on this page. Being a good steward means looking out for those less privileged, those who are struggling, those who slip through the cracks.
It means at times speaking up and other times staying quiet, listening and learning.
It means, to me, opening up BMK for those who need a place to escape, heal and feel welcomed when life gets hard.
Being a good steward is a philosophy I try to live in all walks of life. Appreciating that I’m a guest on this earth and it’s my duty to be kind, be responsible and do my best to leave wherever I go better than when I arrived.
Do I always succeed? No.
Does that keep me from trying again the next day?
No.
Today’s projects as we get ready for summer camps and events:
Make new shutters for the house
Stain, stain and stain- benches, handrails, rocking chairs, tables, decks…
Repaint rainbow canopy, metal artwork, rainbow bridge, archery targets.
Add 29 more items to the fairy forest (more to come)
Install bat houses
Burn 2 more brush piles
Plant garden
Cut rounds for fairy garden camp
And more…
