Amor fati. Love your fate.

I didn’t want to hustle to the mall right after my final team building/ emotional intelligence workshop ended, to get my daughter to her skating lesson and tackle school supply shopping at target.
And when the figuring skating daughter wasn’t ready to go right away, I felt myself rise to a simmer.
Because I wanted to workout.
I wanted to get ready for tomorrow’s final camp of the season and not stay up until 1am doing so.
I didn’t want to drive her to the mall and certainly wasn’t jazzed about venturing into Target and avoiding the temptation to leave with 67 more things than on the list.
I had to make a choice- stay pissy and annoyed, justifying it with exhaustion and a long to do list… OR… take what I had just taught to two back to back groups of amazing nurses, and put it into action.
Amor Fati. Love your fate. It’s what you have in this moment, at this time, love it or hate it, it is yours.
But when you love it- you get to find the advantage, the opportunity, the goodness.
And when embracing your fate feels too hard to do, or your state of being at a simmer keeps you from connecting to it- then turn to compassion and acts of kindness towards others.
That is the antidote to just about every unpleasant emotion.
I walked into the mall and went to work looking for ways to be kind, connect with others and do my part to be a mindful leader.
I didn’t want to be there. But I was. So how was I going to spend my time?
If I wanted evidence to back up my belief that Target school shopping would be stressful, I would have found it.
If I wanted evidence that my night was going to suck because of this- I would have found it.
And I would have missed all of the beautiful little moments of joy that Finn and I got to experience.
Every day we get opportunities to choose our own adventure and stay curious about what comes next, while finding a way to love what fate hands you.
