Homemade Pop-TartsPop-Tarts are advertised as a breakfast food for kids and after school snack. Processed Pop-Tarts are full of artificial colors, ingredients and refined sugars. Making Pop-Tarts from scratch is easy and a great way to introduce your kids to baking.

 

 

 

 

 

Homemade Pop tarts

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour organic unbleached all purpose, spelt, organic whole wheat
  • 1 stick butter organic from grass fed cows cut into small pieces
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/3 cup cold water

Vanilla Glaze

  • Powdered sugar organic, or Swerve brand sugar free
  • vanilla
  • dash of whole milk or cream organic, grass fed cows

Options

  • Mix warmed fruit used inside pop tart with powdered sugar
  • cocoa powder with the vanilla glaze
  • peppermint extract
  • cinnamon and brown sugar with vanilla glaze

Filling Options

  • Dark chocolate chips
  • peanut butter and jelly
  • Blueberries heat fresh or frozen fruit in a small sauce pan and slowly heat, you can add 1T of sweetener as well
  • Strawberries
  • Cinnamon and brown sugar with powdered sugar glaze

Instructions

  • preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Cut butter into flour and salt and combine completely. Add cold water (give or take 1/3 cup) and working the mixture into a dough. Knead briefly. Roll the dough into a thin sheet and using either a pizza roller, knife or rectangular cutters, cut the dough into your desired size of rectangles for the pop tart. Place a small amount of filling in the middle of one rectangle and press second sheet onto top and press the sides together. Prick the top with a fork a few times and bake for about 15-20 minutes until they are just starting to brown. Cool and cover with a glaze. Store in fridge or freezer and simply reheat in a toaster oven or eat cold.
